Barcelona Picks Ronald Koeman As Manager. After last week’s devastating blow to the entire team and management of Barcelona Football Club, loosing 8-2 to Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League, the club has announced the appointment of Ronald Koeman as manager of the club.
Josep Maria Bartomeu, President, Barcelona made this known Tuesday on the club’s website.
Koeman’s appointment is coming after three days the club sacked Quique Setien as well as Eric Abidal, the sporting director.
“If everything goes well Koeman will be the Barcelona coach,” Bartomeu told Barca TV.
“We bet on Koeman because of his experience. He was in the Dream Team, he believes in our philosophy. Before the pandemic, in January, Koeman told us that he had a commitment with the Dutch team through the Euros.”
“FC Barcelona and Eric Abidal have reached an agreement for the termination of the contract binding both parties.
“The club publicly expresses its gratitude to Eric Abidal for the professionalism, commitment, dedication and positive and close treatment that he has always shown towards all the estates that make up the Barca family, and wishes him luck and success in the future,” the club said in a statement.
Setien only won 16 of his 25 games at the Barca helm which resulted to a trophyless 2019/20 season.
Pundits believe the 16-year old manager has already been under pressure before the clash with Bayern after he failed to stop Real Madrid clinching the league title.
