Ledley joins Mourinho’s coaching staff as first-team assistant

Ledley King has been appointed as Tottenham’s first-team assistant, the club announced on Thursday.

King spent his entire playing career with Spurs where he racked up 323 appearances before retiring in 2012 due to chronic knee problems.

The 39-year-old has been working as a club ambassador since and will now join Jose Mourinho’s backroom staff.

He will support academy players stepping up to the first-team level and work alongside the coaches, analysts and playing squad.

Mourinho told the club’s website: “I am extremely pleased to be welcoming Ledley into the first team group as we continue our preparations for the new season.

“He has a tremendous affinity with this football club and the fans appreciate just how much he has accomplished as a true Spurs man both on and off the pitch.

“We have developed a good relationship since I arrived, and we hope to use his experience and insight to support the work we are doing with the squad.”

The news was announced on the club’s website with the departure of tactical analyst Ricardo Formosinho also confirmed.
