Charlton, who made a club record 773 appearances for Leeds United, has passed away at the age of 85

Leeds United legend Jack Charlton has passed away at the age of 85 following a long-term illness.

Charlton spent 23-years at Elland Road where he made a club-record 773 appearances for the club, a record which is unlikely to ever be broken.

The centre-back was a key player in the club’s golden age under Don Revie, joining the team in 1950 initially as a part of the ground staff before making his debut against Doncaster in April 1953.

Charlton would win promotion from the second tier twice in 1956 as runners-up, before Don Revie led Leeds United to the Second Division title in 1964.

He would go on to win the League Cup, two Inter Cities’ Fairs Cups, the First Division, Charity Shield and FA Cup before hanging up his boots at the end of the 1972/73 season.

Following his retirement as a player he went on to enjoy a successful career in management at Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle United and also with the Republic of Ireland, who he took to two World Cup tournaments in 1990 and 1994.

The Charlton family have issued a statement this morning.

“Jack died peacefully on Friday 10 July at the age of 85,” it reads.

“He was at home in Northumberland, with his family by his side.

“As well as a friend to many, he was a much-adored husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
