RB Leipzig have completed the signing of Dominic Szoboszlai from Salzburg. The Hungary international joins the Bundesliga side in an initial £18 million deal. The Athletic revealed earlier this month that Leipzig were leading the race for Szoboszlai’s signature, ahead of Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
What are the terms of the deal?
Leipzig have paid their sister side an initial £18 million.
Szoboszlai has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract until 2025.
The Athletic understands that there is a 20 per cent sell-on mechanism which, unusually, applies to the entire fee of a future transfer and not just the profit.
He has been handed the number 17 shirt.
Why is Szoboszlai so highly rated?
Szoboszlai joined Salzburg from FC Liefering in January 2018 and has scored 26 goals in 82 appearances, including four goals (as well as five assists) in 11 Austrian Bundesliga games this season.
Among the most promising, coveted and talked about young talents in world football, the 20-year-old attacking midfielder was wanted by a number of Europe’s leading clubs.
What has been said?
Szoboszlai told the Leipzig club website: “I’m very pleased that this transfer has been completed.
“The club has developed fantastically. It is among the best teams in the Bundesliga and is also doing well in the Champions League.
“This step is perfect for my development. I’m coming to Leipzig to work under a top coach and in an extremely ambitious team, that is very young but also has a lot of experience and has been able to celebrate success.
“Here, I’ll be able to continue my development incredibly and I want to help the club to continue its success in 2021.”
