Goals from Naby Keita, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Georginio Wijnaldum put Liverpool into a commanding lead on the night of their title coronation, but Olivier Giroud has given Chelsea a lifeline.
Liverpool have got their title party off to an almost perfect start – but an injury time goal from Olivier Giroud has given Chelsea hope of mounting a comeback.
There is more riding on it for The Blues, who can seal their place in the Champions League next season if they emerge from Anfield with at least a point.
But Liverpool were in no mood to let Frank Lampard’s side ruin their celebrations.
Naby Keita fired the home side in front with a thumping effort from distance which clipped the crossbar on the way in.
Soon after Trent Alexander-Arnold whipped in a pearler of his own, curling a free-kick over the wall and past Kepa Arrizabalaga who didn’t even move.
Georginio Wijnaldum looked to have put Liverpool out of sight just minutes later as he shot high into the net after Chelsea failed to clear a corner.
But just as Liverpool were dreaming of an early glass of champagne, Giroud struck on the stroke of half-time to remind them there is still time left in this fixture.
