Manchester United will make sure none of their casual workers are out of pocket as a result of the football shutdown during the coronavirus crisis, committing to pay more than 3,000 staff members.
In a gesture of goodwill that will cost the club in excess of £1million, United will pay matchday and non-matchday casual workers if Premier League games are cancelled or plated behind closed doors.
The club took the unprecedented step as a result of the financial uncertainty facing the casual workforce during the coronavirus pandemic, which has seen all Premier League fixtures suspended until at least the end of April.
The goodwill payment will be made to all matchday and non-matchday casual workers who have worked for the club in the past three months.
Ed Woodward, executive vice chairman, said: “We rely on our outstanding staff to deliver an exceptional service and experience to fans at Old Trafford.
“We understand that these are unprecedented circumstances and want to give them security whatever may happen regarding our remaining fixtures this season.
