According to a poll conducted by Marca, German goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen was voted Barcelona’s best player for the 2019/2020 season ahead of Lionel Messi.

The annual poll for 22 player of the Catalan’s first team was released by the Spanish publication on its official website with the rank of the squad in order of votes.

Interestingly, Messi scored 28 goals in 41 games in all competitions this which is less than his usual haul but a lot still expected him to emerge with the top prize but ter Stegen’s exceptional performances throughout a difficult season did not go unnoticed by the fans.

Messi was obviously angry after Barcelona lost their league title to Real Madrid on Thursday night following a rare defeat against Osasuna, he said: ‘I said a while ago that if we carry on like this it will be very hard for us to win the Champions League.

I’m sure the fans are running out of patience because, playing like we have done, and after the Roma and defeats, we’re not giving them anything. We were not expecting this. We didn’t want to end La Liga playing like this, but it kind of reflects how this whole year has gone.’

Barcelona play their final match in La Liga away from home against Alavés on Sunday.
