Nigerian coach win trophy in Europe

Nigerian coach Edward John Ikem Newton win Trophy in Europe after guiding Trabzonspor to win Turkish Cup.

The 48-year-old was appointed assistant manager in February before he took over as caretaker coach from Hüseyin Çimşir during the second half of the season after they narrowly missed out on the Turkish Super Lig title to Istanbul Basaksehir.

Newton ensured Trabzonspor win their first trophy in a decade after beating Alanyaspor 2-0 in the Turkish Cup final at Atatürk Olympic with goals from Abdulkadir Omur and Crystal Palace loanee Alexander Sorloth Alexander Sorloth.

Anthony Nwakaeme who is the only Nigerian player left in the team after the departure of Ogenyi Onazi and John Mikel Obi in January and March respectively has now add the Turkish cup winners medal to his medal collections.

Trabzonspor have now won the Turkish Cup nine times as the Black Sea club previously claimed it in 1977, 1978, 1984, 1992, 1995, 2003, 2004, and 2010.

It’s unclear if former Chelsea assistant coach Newton will get to stay on as manager next season for his first-ever full-time managerial appointment, but having survived all that drama, he’s surely a most battle-tested candidate already.
