Ronaldo, first footballer to hit $1bn in earnings

Christiano Ronaldo has become the first footballer in history to hit the $1 billion mark in earnings, according to Forbes.

CR7, as he is popularly called is ranked No. 4 among the richest sports men and women in the world beating rival, Lionel Messi who managed to earn $104 million this year.

The 35 year-old maverick is the third to clinch the spot as an athlete still in action and the first in a team sport.

Ronaldo’s fortune was boosted by the arrays of his most his businesses such as his CR7 brand, hotel chain and a museum in his country home.

The duo of Ronaldo and Messi have won 10 Ballon d’Or trophies consecutively from 2008 to 2018.

Ronaldo world return to action June 20 when the Serie A resumes. Juventus is currently top of the table with a point ahead Lazio.
