President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for its role in the successful revival of the Port Harcourt Refinery, as petroleum product loading commenced on November 26, 2024. This milestone signifies a critical step in Nigeria’s journey toward energy independence and economic revitalization.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Tinubu highlighted the significant contributions of former President Muhammadu Buhari in initiating the comprehensive rehabilitation of Nigeria’s refineries. Tinubu noted that Buhari’s vision and commitment to addressing the nation’s refining capacity laid the groundwork for this achievement, bridging a long-standing gap in domestic petroleum processing.

The President also expressed his gratitude to the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) for its financial support of the refinery rehabilitation project. This partnership reflects growing confidence in Nigeria’s energy sector and underscores the potential for further international collaborations to boost the country’s energy infrastructure. The funding provided by Afreximbank was instrumental in executing the project, reinforcing the government’s determination to modernize and expand Nigeria’s refining capabilities.
The Port Harcourt Refinery, one of Nigeria’s foremost refining facilities, had previously been plagued by decades of neglect, operational inefficiencies, and underperformance. Its revitalization marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s energy sector, promising to reduce the country’s reliance on imported refined petroleum products. With the refinery back in operation, Nigeria is poised to enhance its energy security, cut down on foreign exchange expenditures, and create employment opportunities across the energy value chain.
President Tinubu emphasized that this achievement aligns with his administration’s broader energy reform agenda, aimed at ensuring self-sufficiency in petroleum product supply and fostering economic growth. He called for accelerated energy sector reforms to consolidate this progress, urging stakeholders to maintain momentum and prioritize sustainability.
The President also highlighted the importance of leveraging Nigeria’s vast natural resources to drive economic transformation. He called on NNPCL and other key players in the energy sector to remain proactive in developing innovative strategies to maximize resource utilization. Tinubu stressed the need for transparency, efficiency, and collaboration in managing Nigeria’s energy assets to secure long-term benefits for the nation.
Furthermore, the revival of the Port Harcourt Refinery is expected to complement other ongoing projects, such as the Dangote Refinery, in addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges. Together, these initiatives signal a shift towards a more self-reliant and resilient energy industry, with the potential to position Nigeria as a leading player in Africa’s energy landscape.
President Tinubu’s commendation of NNPCL and his call for accelerated energy reforms underscore his administration’s resolve to tackle the persistent issues in the energy sector. The Port Harcourt Refinery’s revival serves as a testament to the government’s dedication to achieving tangible results, paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable energy future for Nigeria.
