After a successful run at the Major league soccer side DC United, the English and the Manchester United record goal scorer is back as the head coach. Wayne Rooney spent 18 months at DC United and captained the side scoring 23 goals and 15 assists in 48 games. He later joined Derby County as a player coach in 2020.
During his stay as the interim coach, he saw the team relegate from the championship. This was a result of a 21 point deduction that left the team just 7 points above relegation last season.
This is Rooney’s second managerial position since leaving Derby County last month. Moreover the former Everton forward has rejected criticism for his decision to join the American club.
“I’ve seen a few articles, certainly back in England, on this being a possible backward step in my managerial career.”
“I really find that a bit disrespectful to this league.” said the 36 year old.
With a few clubs both in Europe and England advancing towards the English forward, he said his initial plan was to take a brake after Derby County.
Rooney claimed that once DC United came in for him, he spoke with his wife first. Then things quickly moved towards him accepting the position.
“There were a few other clubs both in England and in Europe who got in touch. My plan really was to, after Derby County, take a bit of a break and then see what comes up.
“Once my agent called and said DC had come in, it was quite quick really, probably within 24 hours.”
DC United has been without a manager for almost 3 months and they are the bottom of the table.
The Co- chairmen of club, Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan said in a statement: “He’s already proven in his young coaching career that he knows how to lead a group through adversity.
“He has an understanding of our league and what it takes to be successful in Major League Soccer. Thanks to his two-year stay with us as a player.
“The passion he showed while wearing Black-and-Red electrified our city and our club. we are so excited to welcome him back as our head coach.”
The New head coach, Wayne Rooney added : “To come here back to the MLS, back to DC United, was an exciting challenge for me. Something which I feel can develop me as a coach.
“The team need to improve. I think that’s obvious for everyone to see, and I really think with my capabilities of developing young players . Of course we’re working hard to get a few new players in. We can really get this club to successful ways again.
“It’s going to take a lot of hard work, but that’s what I’m here to do and really improve the team.”
He also talked about his ambition of coaching at the top level and considered the job a step forward.
The club will continue to be led by interim head coach Chad Ashton. Since Rooney is waiting to get his work visa.
