Xavi Hernandez’s Barcelona improved in the shortest of time. Barcelona has gotten some heads turning due to their mouth watering performances in La Liga and also the Europa league, and it is largely down to former Barcelona legend and current coach XAVi Hernandez.
The Spanish Gaint has scored 17goals in five matches.it was during the January transfer window and the international break that helped Xavi organize a mini pre-season with the new signings and was able to return Barca to it’s Origin and it’s original style of play.
The coach was able to work with almost everyone, positional play was practiced & new signings allowed to take the step that was missing.
For a couple of weeks now, Xavi’s team is showing good form scoring goal Left, right and center. The only league defeat came almost 4 months ago and the recent matches vs Valencia, Atleti, Napoli or Athletic shows that the team is getting closer to what Xavi wants.
Xavi took over in November but barely had time to work properly. The schedule was very tight with two games per week. It was followed by the Christmas holidays, the Covid outbreak and the trip to Saudi Arabia for the Super Cup.
In Riyadh the first big change was seen. After doing well vs Sevilla just before the break, Barça stood tall vs Real Madrid forcing extra-time.
Barça lost but it was recognisable that they are on the right track. The team played well.
The turning point was the international break in January. Xavi was able to count on almost everyone, the new signings arrived and the foundations were laid.
The intention was to synchronize movements, play together and work very hard.
In Xavi’s methodology as a coach, constant collective videos are made throughout the year, but the calendar did not allow the coaches to do so just after Xavi was appointed as the coach.
They took advantage of the break and the weeks without a game to do collective video sessions and then work on it on the pitch: high pressure, ball output, attacks against teams that sit deep and also that press well, how to attack outside and inside.
The idea is clear. All the movements are practiced with the intention of creating game habits, synchronizing movements between players and getting to know each other.
The coaches also promoted coexistence and good vibes in the group, positional play was practiced and the team responded to the tactics well
How to face and occupy the spaces was key. Before there was more chaos and several players in the same space. Now the positions are respected more and the team is less chaotic.
In the staff they see the process underway and the turning point for them was in Seville where they competed very well.
From then on, the team went further and then made new signings that have made the definitive leap that the group was missing, Aubameyang has been one of the stand out signing as his positional play has been really good,he’s like a fox in the box and fits perfectly to what XAVi wants and what the team has been lacking since Luis Suarez left the club,
Adama Traore with his direct runs has been able to cause opposition defense a really trouble in the games he’s played he has created 4 assist, although, the XAVi feels he could still improve in his decision making
Ferran Torres in his link up plays with Aubameyang has been superb, but he’s been lacking in confidence and in front of goal which the coach pointed out will be worked on on the training ground.
Daniel Alves has been a great leader on and off the pitch for this Barcelona side something they lacked in the past few seasons with pique and Busquet,he a former player and team mate of current Barcelona coach XAVi understands the philosophy of the coach and he’s always trying to communicate his ideas to young players like Sergino Dest and Adama Traore.
The scariest thing about this Barcelona side his that Xavi is building a team for the future and the quality of the youngster like Gavi, Pedri, De jong and also Ansu Fati who’s out injured will help put the team back to it’s glory days
The results have started to come but the coaches consider that there is still a lot of work to be done, if Barcelona is to be considered the team to beat.
But they are very satisfied with how things are going, convinced that they are on the right track. The Xavi method is already bearing fruit.
